Acls

The term ACLS or Advanced Cardiac Life Support is one that many of us are familiar with, we may have heard it used on various television shows or seen it on the side of an ambulance, you may even know someone who is a paramedic that is ACLS certified. The question is do you really understand what it means to be ACLS certified and what the person who is certified is actually able to do. The actual term ACLS is used in reference to a specific set of clinical interventions used to undertake the urgent treatment of someone who is in cardiac arrest or one of many other life threatening emergent situations. It is also used to denote the person who has been properly trained and has the skills and knowledge needed to use these interventions in the care and treatment of their patient. To become ACLS certified a person will undergo long and vigorous training as well as months of practice before they can be fully certified.

For this reason only those who need the knowledge such as doctors, nurses, paramedics, and respiratory therapists generally undertake this training as these tend to be the only professions that need the knowledge and training in their normal course of work. To become ACLS certified the student will first have to be Basic Life Support trained and be certified in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation. From here they will be taught how to use a 12 lead electrocardiogram and be able to interpret the wave patterns both on the screen and on the accompanying printout. This will enable the student to make split second decisions that can affect the outcome of the situation regarding whether the patient will live or die. At the same time the ACLS student will learn all about emergency pharmacology and which medications should be used in a particular situation. You will also learn how each medication should be used and how much of it should be used as well as at what point in the emergent situation the medication should be given to the patient.

To facilitate the use of certain medications the student will be taught how to start an IV and the insert a shunt so that the medication can be administered more easily into the bloodstream for faster reaction. In the event of cardiac arrest or cardiac arrhythmia the ACLS student will also learn how to use a manual defibrillation unit. This manual unit can be used far more accurately than the AED which is only capable of delivering a preprogrammed charge. With a manual defibrillator in the right hands it is possible to stabilize the heart of a patient who in various stages of cardiac arrest. Being ACLS certified means that you have the ability to save lives in far more ways than those who have only basic life support training. If you want to advance your skills and knowledge with ACLS training you need to talk to the instructors at Master Train.
