12 Lead Ecg

When doctors or emergency room staff need to get an accurate picture of how a patient's heart is functioning they call for a 12 lead ECG. The ECG or electrocardiograph is designed to allow the physician to evaluate the status of the patient's heart by looking at its electrical conduction system. Basically what this means is that the ECG machine is used to give the doctor a graphical representation of the heart muscles via their electrical activity. The wavy lines on the 12 lead ECG represent the patient's heart beat and can be used to diagnose abnormalities in the heart, the machine can also be attached to a printer to provide a permanent record of the patient's heart beat for a cardiologist to study more closely, this is known in medical circles as an interpretation of the ECG.

The ECG is used to create waves and intervals which are printed on the ECG paper to create a pattern for interpretation. The information from the 12 lead ECG can help the physician or the technician who is trained to read the waves to gain a better understanding of the contractions of both the aorta or upper chambers of the heart by providing regulated electrical signals that cause the atria and ventricles of the heart to contract as specified intervals. The 12 lead ECG is also used to interpret the activities of the left and right ventricles along with the corresponding resetting of the electrical cells in these ventricles.

When the ventricles contract is causes the cells in the atria to reset, which in turn can hide the signals and not allow them to be seen in the waveform on the ECG paper. Proper ECG study and interpretation can help the doctor or technician analyze these cycles and check for any abnormalities in the patient's heart beat. Depending on what is seen the physician or technician can make one of three diagnoses, normal, abnormal or borderline when the findings are inconclusive. During the interpretation the person doing the reading will create a list of all abnormalities seen so as to aid in a proper diagnosis of the patient's condition. At this point it is vital that the doctor understand all of the terms used and the physiology of the 12 lead ECG interpretations in order to make an accurate diagnosis of the patient's condition.

The 12 lead ECG can be used for both inpatient and outpatients screenings and both doctors and technicians must be able to make fast, skilled interpretations of the waveforms they see in order to make a quick diagnosis of a patient that might have a major coronary condition. This is an important part of training for all medical professionals from doctors and nurses to EMTs and technicians and has resulted in many saved lives. If you are in the medical field and need updated training on the 12 lead ECG and how to interpret what you see in the waveform, you need to schedule training at Master Train.
